This rug is the original handwoven piece by Giacometti for his own use, not to be confused with the later limited edition that was produced for the market.

Extensive documentation regarding this rug has been saved, including original, hand written correspondence as well as a certificate of authenticity stamped and signed by the artist.

This piece was first acquired by a New York collector in 1985 and has been wonderfully maintained in mint condition. The rug appears to have barely been used by the artist while in his Paris apartment and the subsequent collector kept the piece in storage for over 30 years since the acquisition. It is now being offered on the market for the first time since it's initial purchase in 1985.

Origin

In 1984, the sculptor Diego Giacometti designed two carpets "La Rencontre" and "La Promenade des Amis." His venture into textile drew much inspiration from his sculptures and furniture. Giacometti devised his designs with carpet models made of paper. In fact, he cut a large sheet of craft paper cut to the dimensions of the future rug and pasted his two dimensional elements made from cut-out Canson paper. These designs evoke simulate the shadow of one of his tables on a carpet of light color: the structure of the table forms the framework of its composition, on which the bestiary of the "La Promenade des Amis" unfolds.
